Would You Wear a $225 Fox Fur Merkin? RHONY Alum Cindy Barshop Tells Us Why You Should

Because the beauty world is nothing if not contradictory at times (ie a “natural look” that requires 10 different products), today we heard about a new grooming treatment: fox fur and feathers for your newly waxed pudenda. Yes, a fox fur merkin now exists. (And a thousand kudos to Gawker for dubbing it the “Furkin.”) When we heard Hoda and Kathie Lee mention it this morning on the Today show, we had to hear more.
Completely Bare salons, owned by Real Housewives of New York alum Cindy Barshop, is offering two new procedures, the “Foxy Bikini” ($225) and the “Carnivale” ($195). Cindy is widely credited as being the originator of the short-lived vajazzling trend, so she’s no stranger to sticking exotic things in your nether regions. We spoke to Cindy today to try to get answers to the two big questions we had about her new services: Why? and How?
Fashionista: How did you come up with this idea?
Cindy Barshop: Beauty always follows fashion and I get my inspirations from fashion. All the colored furs are in now and Carnivale’s coming with the feathers so, that’s where my inspiration comes from.
What’s the application process? Do you have to go completely bare?
You don’t have to go completely bare. We can do it any way you want. We actually work with the technicians and your body type and the design that you want. If you are completely bare, I prefer that look. And it depends on the shape of the fur and the shape of the feathers. You don’t just plop it on there. And it lasts! It lasts for a good 3 or 4 days.
Can you shower and get it wet?
Yeah. But I’d tell you not to scrub it.
You mentioned shape earlier. What are some of the shapes?
There’s no shapes. It’s more like a puff.
What do the feathers look like?
The feathers are just multi-colored feathers. We cut and trim them to the body. They’re yellow, pink, red. It depends on what your coloring and skin type is. We match it that way.
How do you attach it?
We have a special glue that’s certified to be OK for the body.
Can you take it off at home, or do you need to come back in to get it removed?
You can take it off at home. You can use a little alcohol to take it off and baby oil afterwards. It’s not simple to take off, but you just have to scrub a little bit.
Have you had many people making appointments for it yet?
We have a few, yeah.
Have you done this on yourself?
I did. I test everything on myself and my whole staff. At first there wasn’t enough body parts [so] I was doing it all over my legs to try it out. It takes a while. It’s not something you just come up with. There’s a certain way of doing it to make sure that it stays and looks nice.
Have you heard of other salons doing this or do you think you’re the first?
There’s no way another salon’s doing this. Completely Bare is always the first.
Where do you get the fur from?
Some of it is vintage. Some of it is from different places.
Is it dyed?
It’s dyed. As of right now the light pinkish looks the best and we have a vibrant red, but [the colors will] change.
Do you think this will be big for Valentine’s Day?
I’ve been in the business for so long that I think it’s going to be big for everybody. It’s not just for an occasion. Like when you buy yourself some lingerie or a new t-shirt. You should feel good, it’s fun, you do it.
We found out after we interviewed Cindy that PETA had already issued a statement about the procedure (which Completely Bare just launched yesterday), telling Today: “It’s outright sleazy, and it’s downright cruel to kill an animal to decorate your privates.”
