Here's what you need to know about fall fashion '12: It's less about trends, more about texture.
Leathers, suedes, furs, metallics, brocades and velvets comprise the all-star, all-luxe ensemble that will undoubtedly make a few cameos in your closet this season.
According to local fashion stylist and blogger Christie Moeller, the look represents a departure from recent, pared down seasons, which may or may not be a sign of the economic times.
"Because of the recession, designers really pulled back," she says. "Everyone was trying to lower costs. They weren't getting the Italian leathers or the best fabrics."
That's no longer the case. "Whether or not the recession is over," she continues, "people are over the recession."
And, everyone knows once the diet is off, the indulging begins. Consider this season an indulgence of textiles.
The texture topping the totem pole? Leather.
Moeller gives one specific piece her wholehearted fashion endorsement. "Every single person should own a pair of leather leggings," she says.
Plus-size women might take issue with "every single person." For curvier types, she recommends a tunic, or oversize sweater, exposing just the knees and lower legs. Or, she suggests, go with regular leggings and a tuxedo stripe of leather down the side.
Color trends include dark green and burgundy or, as the British call it, oxblood. Also, combining navy and black is now considered the perfect marriage, where it used to be frowned upon.
In fact, anything once viewed as a passe pairing is hot for fall, including jewelry. Rose gold now plays well with white and yellow gold. Throw in some silver to really ruffle the feathers of those who oblige age-old fashion rules.
These combinations lend depth, according to Moeller, who has employed the mismatch tactic in photo shoots for years.
And, Henri Bendel, which recently opened in Las Vegas, boasts an array of metal-mixing accessories at the new Fashion Show mall store. It also features several "statement handbags," which is what the new "it" bag is all about. Shoppers no longer have to hunt down a specific style, such as the hobo bag with feather strap detailing or the quilted bag with a chain handle. As long as it makes a statement, it's in.
Shoppers need not reach too deep into their handbags this season, either. First lady Michelle Obama, who has established herself as a fashion trendsetter, recently donned a Tracy Reese dress for her speech at the Democratic National Convention. Right in tune with the upcoming season's texture theme, it featured a brocade print with a metallic sheen.
Reese plans to put it into heavy production and will keep the price less than $500.
Local shoppers have grown used to much lower prices with stores such as Patty's Closet, a modestly priced women's clothing boutique, popping up all over town (there are seven total in Las Vegas).
Shoppers here will keep with trends this season simply by going the "faux" route. While shopping for fall inventory, owner Patty Barba picked up an abundance of faux leather and faux fur. But, sequins also will have a strong presence in her stores. In fact, she recommends shoppers pick up a pair of "good sequined shorts or pants" to instantly incorporate fall '12 into their wardrobes.
Other than that, she says, the ladylike trend is staying strong. It just has a new look. "We have some nice chiffon blouses that you would see your grandma wearing, but with studs," Barba says.
Faux leather serves the same detailing function on shoulders, elbows, pockets and kneecaps.
Barba also hypes up the leather legging, giving credit to Kim Kardashian who sported the look on several episodes of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" a few seasons ago.
"The Kardashians have had a big influence on the way girls dress," she says. "Kim always looks so put together and that's hard. Girls admire that."

Designer Maria Pinto, well-known for dressing first lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, used her eye for fashion to curate antiquities from the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago for a new exhibit that includes a century-old shredded bark Brazilian ceremonial costume and a woven monkey fur necklace.
The materials are a stretch from the rich, bright purple silk Pinto used to design the sheath Obama wore during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. "Fashion and The Field Museum Collection: Maria Pinto" opened Friday and includes an Inuit raincoat made of seal intestines. It was the first item that caught Pinto's attention, she said.
"I could totally see anyone wearing it," Pinto said. "What I loved about these creations was they had limited resources. They needed a raincoat and they realized they could use seal intestines. How creative is that?"
Pinto walked through the vast storage areas under the museum and chose items that appealed to her. Pinto and co-curator Alaka Wali chose 25 garments and adornments to pair with seven pieces from Pinto's collections. The museum items are juxtaposed with Pinto's designs.
"Part of the point is you can't tell if she designed them or someone in the Andes Amazon designed them," said Janet Hong, an exhibition project manager at the museum.
Another highlight is a full outfit designed by Pinto, who closed her Chicago boutique more than two years ago because of the poor economic climate. The outfit includes a structured blue wool coat, red fur collar and skinny pants. It was inspired by a Chinese theatrical headdress.
Pinto found herself particularly drawn to weapons, tools and armor in the museum collection. She matched metal elbow-length samurai gauntlets with a wool green suit for the office, saying the suit is modern-day armor for women.
"The whole idea of armor plays into a lot of how I envision what we wear every day," Pinto said.
Other Pinto designs in the exhibit include a sequined chiffon shoulderless cocktail dress from her 2008 fall collection and a knee-length black silk taffeta, bias-cut cocktail dress from her 2010 spring collection.
The exhibition has a trendier feel than many other exhibits at the museum known for dinosaurs and mummies. A large video is projected on one wall showing images from the exhibit accompanied by techno music that might be heard on runways in New York.
"I wanted it to be something more contemporary," Pinto said. "Make the music have an influence over the experience to the degree of making it more of an art gallery."
The exhibit runs through June 16.

Kanye West Raps About Balling Out in Mink Coats
Kanye West has proved two things above all else to his scores of followers since he first released “The College Dropout” in 2004. The first is that, above all else, Kanye West is the biggest artist in the world today. His vision for records, his innate ability to produce a music catalog over the past eight years that is both consistently commercially successful but also critically acclaimed, his clever wordplay and super-intensive producing abilities; all of these things have defined his career.
The second thing we’ve all learned about Kanye is that he is out-of-his mind, somebody-get-him-a-straitjacket insane. He’s perverse, obsessive, irrational, yet somehow masterful. He’s a crazed genius of music, and any attempt to make sense of what he does would be futile. Instead, we should just sit back and enjoy the wild, crazy ride that is Kanye West.
Such is the case with “Cruel Summer,” featuring Kanye and the rest of the G.O.O.D Music crew – Pusha T, Common, Kid Cudi, Cyhi and 2 Chainz. Half is a psychological study, and the other half is a braggadocios dissertation, all wrapped up in a grand, orchestral and epic production.
Take the first song of the album, “To The World,” featuring R. Kelly. The song starts out with some music that is absolutely over-the-top epic. A hard driving beat with a drum line fit for a military march begins, and suddenly, this album is off to a roaring start.
You feel like Kanye has prepared this album, as a coronation of sort, crowning himself the king of music today. R. Kelly’s voice, as soulful as ever, comes in over the beat and it feels both incredible and dignified at the same time. Yet, somehow, the song delves into a sort of nihilism, with R. Kelly crooning to listeners to, “Stick your middle fingers up to the world.” This is the overriding, and at times disconcerting theme to this album. We find a man who has a God-complex, but also a perpetual sense of under appreciation. Only Kanye could rap about how he’s balling out in mink coats and how nothing anybody says can affect him, yet insult Kris Humphries, for no particular reason, for dating Kim Kardashian in the same song, “Cold.” He says Kris is “lucky I didn’t have Jay drop him from the team.”
It doesn’t make sense when you’re Kanye West, the most successful rapper of the past decade, to have to start beef with a no-name NBA player for briefly being married to your fame-mongering, attention whore of a girlfriend. Sorry Kanye, Kim Kardashian sucks.
The end result of these two divergent schools of thought (one says: “I’m God,” the other one says: “Nobody likes me”) is a perplexing album. Others like “To The World,” “The Morning” and “Sin City” have flashes of the introspective, soulful side of Kanye. Yet all of these songs are sprinkled with his idiosyncrasies and character flaws that we’ve come to expect from the type of guy who would drink an entire bottle of Hennessey on the red carpet and then ruin Taylor Swift’s night in front of millions of people.

Kanye West has proved two things above all else to his scores of followers since he first released “The College Dropout” in 2004. The first is that, above all else, Kanye West is the biggest artist in the world today. His vision for records, his innate ability to produce a music catalog over the past eight years that is both consistently commercially successful but also critically acclaimed, his clever wordplay and super-intensive producing abilities; all of these things have defined his career.
The second thing we’ve all learned about Kanye is that he is out-of-his mind, somebody-get-him-a-straitjacket insane. He’s perverse, obsessive, irrational, yet somehow masterful. He’s a crazed genius of music, and any attempt to make sense of what he does would be futile. Instead, we should just sit back and enjoy the wild, crazy ride that is Kanye West.
Such is the case with “Cruel Summer,” featuring Kanye and the rest of the G.O.O.D Music crew – Pusha T, Common, Kid Cudi, Cyhi and 2 Chainz. Half is a psychological study, and the other half is a braggadocios dissertation, all wrapped up in a grand, orchestral and epic production.
Take the first song of the album, “To The World,” featuring R. Kelly. The song starts out with some music that is absolutely over-the-top epic. A hard driving beat with a drum line fit for a military march begins, and suddenly, this album is off to a roaring start.
You feel like Kanye has prepared this album, as a coronation of sort, crowning himself the king of music today. R. Kelly’s voice, as soulful as ever, comes in over the beat and it feels both incredible and dignified at the same time. Yet, somehow, the song delves into a sort of nihilism, with R. Kelly crooning to listeners to, “Stick your middle fingers up to the world.” This is the overriding, and at times disconcerting theme to this album. We find a man who has a God-complex, but also a perpetual sense of under appreciation. Only Kanye could rap about how he’s balling out in mink coats and how nothing anybody says can affect him, yet insult Kris Humphries, for no particular reason, for dating Kim Kardashian in the same song, “Cold.” He says Kris is “lucky I didn’t have Jay drop him from the team.”
It doesn’t make sense when you’re Kanye West, the most successful rapper of the past decade, to have to start beef with a no-name NBA player for briefly being married to your fame-mongering, attention whore of a girlfriend. Sorry Kanye, Kim Kardashian sucks.

As a pelt-wearing vegetarian, I can find no contradiction in caring for animals and wearing fur
Of the controversies at London Fashion Week, the emergence on Sunday of Lady Gaga in what appeared to be several pelts, hot on the heels of a spat with Peta, was – as fashion folk are wont to say – something of "a moment". And yet, as Gaga wears her nonchalance about skin on her sleeve, so a good many British designers seem equally blasé: among them, Burberry, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. Where once fur was confined to a few picketed outlets, now it can be found from haute to high street.
In the last few years there has been a renaissance in the fur industry. The global trade is now worth $15bn (£9.2bn), with pelts reaching record prices at auction. In the UK sales increased by more than 30% between 2010-2011. Where once skin provoked shudders, so now many merely shrug. And yet an angry and vociferous contingent continues to exhibit a knee-jerk antipathy towards fur, while happy to consume milk, meat and leather.
Given today's tight industry regulation, can we take it that the same reasons that make mink a desirable material for coats gives said creatures more protester appeal than, say, a cow? Are antagonists simply favouring fur-ball cuteness over bovine plodding? The answer is that "fur isn't necessary", in a way that suggests steaks and lattes to be among culture's essential pillars.
Personally, I have long been a pelt-wearing vegetarian. My decision to renounce flesh almost 30 years ago was motivated by macroeconomic concerns rather than any big-eyed Disney considerations. Since then, I have also developed distaste for intensive dairy farming. Of meat, milk and fur, it is only the latter that I have found necessary, weathering winters in Russia, Norway, Chicago and back in Blighty.
This – forgive me – foxes people. By the laws of reflex liberalism, those of my ilk are not supposed to "do skin". And yet, like the non-paint-hurling majority, I am wary of an animal rights lobby that refers to medical testing as a "holocaust", terrorises scientists and their families, and would prohibit pets. To compare their activism to that of suffragettes or anti-Nazi protesters is reverse anthropomorphism at its most obscene.
Hostility to fur feeds off antagonisms regarding class, money and misogyny. Modish male lefties may sport leather jackets with impunity, but woe betide the rich bitch in mink. Like hunting, fur inspires hatred because it is associated with the wealthy. It is also embroiled in the usual metropolitan disdain for rural matters. We may like to visit the countryside, but urbanites show scant regard for how its human or animal populations can be sustained.
The fur trade provides income for thousands in remote regions where there can be little alternative employment. Even within the EU, the value of farmed fur products amounts to €1.5bn (£1.2bn), generating 60,000 full-time jobs. And, like many luxury products, fur is enjoying a good recession.
It is in no way perverse to suggest that the industry is also beneficial for animals, in the sense that culling can regulate and thus secure populations – as deer culling does in Britain. Members of the fur trade have been supporters of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species since its inception. And the International Fur Trade Federation has been a voting member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature since 1985. As so often in (regulated) farming and hunting, the interdependence between humans and animals maintains species.
Moreover, in an age of "slow", eco, sustainable fashion, in which heritage has become the watchword, fur can boast an ancestry of 100,000 years. It is a natural, renewable, biodegradable resource. Farmed mink are fed with leftovers otherwise destined for landfills, providing oils for waterproofing and organic fertilisers. In contrast, most fake furs are made from petroleum-based products derived from non-renewable resources. There is a tradition of fur being handed down and restyled through generations, rather less so with fast fashion substitutes.
One of the depressing things about contemporary life is the way in which individuals are expected to subscribe to "domino" opinions – if one holds one view, one is assumed to uphold a series of others – rather than a set of nuanced beliefs. For those who maintain the latter, vegetarianism may even issue from the same source as pro-fur sentiment: a concern for the sharing of resources that considers both humans and animals.
