When is the best time to purchase a fur? Do fur prices go down in the summer? Where can I get the best selection of furs to choose from?
The answers to the questions above are a little complicated. If you are purchasing a fur from a department store, the best time to purchase fur jacket or fur coat is when the stores run a sale.
If you are purchasing a fur coat or from an independent fur store, family owned, in a small town, the best time to puchase a fur is in the summer when their cashflow is at a minimum.
If you are looking to purchase a fur from a fur manufacturer, the price of the fur will be the same all year. The fur manufacturer basis its price on cost of skins, labor and a smaller profit per garment, only because they sell many more fur garments.
This year it gets a bit complicated. If a furrier has inventory from a year ago, he can sell it at a steep discount since the price of fur has increased over 60% in 2 years. For example, a fur store owns a mink coat that cost them $2000 in 2011, the very same coat today cost over $3500. So in 2011 this coat will sell for $4000 and the very same fur coat should sell for $7000, but since the fur store owns it for $2000, they may very well sell it for $4500.
If you decide you want a customized mink coat, the price will be determined at the current skin prices plus labor and plus profit. Each store works on their on formula to come up with their profit margins.
The rule of thumb is the more furs that are sold, the profit margin can drop.
